Change Log

The Kelly Files Database site came on-line in June, 2018. Here's a log of what's changed since then (in reverse chronological order).

August 22, 2021

John Milmo provided updates to the Original Series, Unlettered and Suffix-f files, which have now been incorporated into the database.

Fixed bug in Advanced Search that caused failure when search involved file name.

May 30, 2021

The database has been updated to correct errors discovered by Christian Zwarg, Peter Adamson, Paul Steinson and John Milmo, adding 16 recordings and otherwise improving the search results.

April 18, 2021

Several new and modified Kelly files have been incorporated, taking the total number of recordings over 452,000.

April 9, 2021

The 0KA file has been added to the collection, yielding an additional 1,101 recordings.

"Matrix numbers" for the Original Series of recordings have been corrected to reflect te day of recording and a daily serial number.

Updated versions of the BL, BK and Unlettered files have been incorporated.

February 26, 2021

Some recordings in the 0LA and CTPX files were marked with the wrong recording size. These have now been corrected.

Issues for some recordings were erroneously listed multiple times in search results.

February 13, 2021

New titles were added to Suf-o and Suf-a, a format correction was made in Suf-L, and the name of a pianist accompanying Elsie Carlisle was corrected in the Bb/Cc file as a result of correspondence from a user of the site.

A new file prepared by John Milmo, covering mobile van recordings, special recordings and private recording made between 1934 and 1960 has been parsed, and its more than 8,600 recordings added to the database.

November 21, 2020

Bug fix: A search term that contains a single quote (apostrophe), such as "Joseph O'Mara" failed with an ugly crash. Now it doesn't.

In many cases, Kelly's files used "smart" quotes instead of simple quotes, and the resulting recordings were very difficult to find in a search. Now the problematic characters have been replaced with simple quotes.

November 1, 2020

Over 7,000 recordings from the HMV Celebrity Series Recordings and Historical Reissues 1924-1958 listing (10” records in the DA, DJ, DL and DR series, 12” records in the DB, DK, DM, DO, DQ and DS series, and reissues in the ABHA, ABHB, AGSA, AGSB, IR, IRX, VA and VB series) have been added as ‘new’ recordings because they began life as Victor recordings.

In addition, recordings in that series that began life as HMV or Gramophone Co. recordings may have additional issue numbers added if the issue number from those series was not already in the database.

September 6, 2020

Many entries for recordings by Sir John Barbirolli were improved based on input from Malcolm Walker.

August 23, 2020

John Milmo provided revised versions of the -g/-h/-i files, and several new documents listing recordings from 1934, with prefixes starting with 0A. As a result, the database has approximately 2,000 additional recordings. The latest tally is 425,193.

August 16, 2020

A replacement for the 0BA/2BA file has been incorporated, with many corrections made by John Milmo and John Bolig.

August 1, 2020

A replacement for the old Suf-G file has been incorporated. Based on scans that were made of the 7” recordings at the EMI Archive, data has been added to many of the recording entries in this file, and suffixes appended to the matrix numbers, faithfully transcribed from the actual recordings. Many of the matrix numbers have extended suffixes, the precise meaning of which can now only be guessed at. Whatever these extended suffixes meant, the practice was probably discontinued once the matrix numbering was standardised in 1904 (see the first article by John Milmo under the Resources tab in this website).

July 19, 2020

Several items have been corrected in the Suf-a, Suf-d and Suf-e files and, based on extensive work by John Milmo and Peter Adamson, a completely revised version of the Suf- A(D) file has been incorporated; all of this is related to some of the earliest recordings in the database.

  4. In total, the database now 423,120 recordings.
  5. A few very long titles have been broken into shorter pieces.
  6. The automatic counting of results on the search page may sometimes be a bit faster.

June 15, 2019

Various parsing corrections have removed many duplicate and otherwise spurious recordings. At the same time, recordings with takes like '-1A', '-2A' and so on are now better handled, and many that had been erroneously discarded are now captured. New recording total is 420,834.
